Seniors Bowmaker

Today's event for the Seniors was a Bowmaker Stroke-Play competition played in teams of three with the best two nett scores counting on each hole. Quite a foggy start to the day and with very little breeze, it took a while for it to clear. Once this cleared, we were again treated to a very pleasant late summer's day.
The winning team today with an excellent score of 123 were Allan Trotman, Sandy Deacon & Ofer Ben-David. Runners-up on 126 were Sam Whiting, Steve Vale & Tom Wallin followed by Paul Tebbutt, Ted Fitzsimons & Chris Piper a further two strokes back.

Keith Knight Cup

Today's seniors event was a board competition - The Keith Knight Cup. This is a mixed Stableford competition with the men playing from the white tees. Thirty-two players (26 men and 6 ladies) competed for the prizes. Following the deluge of yesterday, the course was in surprisingly good condition with very little excess water and the greens were excellent. Our thanks once again to Richard and his team for preparing the course.
Today's winner with 43pts (and a very good gross 76) was Paul Tebbutt. Runner-up and playing in the same group was Tom Wallin who just pipped Linda Vale on count-back after both returned 39pts. Linda nearly completed her hat-trick as she was runner-up in 2011 and 2012. Fourth place went to Liz Evans on 38pts just beating John Butcher on the same score. Full details - click here.

Ladies Farewell Tea and Golf Day

The Ladies of Newbury Racecourse held their outgoing Lady Captains farewell tea and golf day, that saw lady members dress for the occasion in honour of their outgoing Lady Captain (a former Head Mistress).

Much to the surprise of other players and those going onto the range, school girls poured out of the clubhouse onto the course.  The swirling wind did nothing for the schoolgirl hair do's and hats, nor the rain that followed. Sian kindly provided goodies for the starting hut, which became the Tuck Shop for the afternoon. Another schoolgirl managed to infiltrate the course earlier, and secreted some rather nasty looking vermin in the 7th and 9th holes, so the first person to putt out was treated to a nasty shock. In true gung-ho style, all ladies finished the 9 hole Bowmaker and retreated to the Clubhouse.

The Headmistress - sorry, Ladies Captain, took charge of the meal, and various punishments were issued when misdemeanours occurred!  It is believed that some lady members are still standing in line outside the Ladies Changing Room!!!!!!! The winning team on the day was led by Fay Unsworth, ably assisted by Jean Raincock, Liz Evans and Judy Willson.
A memorable afternoon to end a fantastic year.
Thank you Jan - you've made it fun!

Runners-up on 55.0 were Sam Whiting, Paul Tebbutt & Gordon Turner followed by Tommy Lees, Ofer Ben-David and Jan Hinks who just pipped Tom Wallin, Derrick Perrin & Ken Croucher on count-back after both teams scored 55.4
The nearest-the-pin prizes went to Linda Vale on the 2nd hole and Raymond Bilton on the 16th. The longest drive for the men was won by welcome visitor Jim Purvis (8th hole) and for the ladies Sam Whiting (9th hole).

36 Hole Stableford

There were some challenging conditions for today's 36-Hole Stableford competition with a stiff southerly breeze blowing across the course and some quite heavy showers during the second round. Well done to all players for completing both rounds. There was a separate competition for both men and ladies.

In the men's competition, the winner was Steve Gould with a two-round total of 74pts. Jeremy Twaits was the runner-up just one point further back closely followed by Andrew Mead a further point behind.

September Seniors Medal

After a cool misty start this morning, the temperatures soon rose once the sun came through and with very little breeze, conditions were ideal. Twenty-six men and four ladies competed for today's medals and the scoring was excellent.
In the men's competition, the in-form Les Eden was the winner with an impressive nett 63. Runner-up was Roy Whiting on nett 66 followed by Harry Jackson just one stroke further back. All of the top three earned handicap cuts for their efforts. Fourth placed Paul Tebbutt had the lowest gross (82). Full result - click here.
In the ladies competition, Jan Hinks topped the list and really went to town with a superb nett 61 dropping four shots from her handicap! Runner-up with the lowest gross was Sam Whiting just beating Linda Vale after both returned nett 67. Full result - click here.
There were three 2's recorded this week - and it was a roll-over from last month's medal!! Roy Whiting (2nd), John Clark (16th) and Tom Wallin (16th) all shared the pot.

September Medal

This month's medal was played over two days on both Saturday and Sunday. Twenty players (17 men and 3 ladies) competed for the medals which were played again in two mixed divisions.

Division 1
It was very tight in the top division with count-back required to identify the winner. Jon Miller just squeaked ahead of Jeremy Twaits courtesy of a one stroke difference on the back nine holes after both returned nett 67. John Day grabbed third spot just one stroke further back and the lowest gross of the day - 75.
Full result - click here.

Division 2
Sandy Deacon was the star in the division 2 medal with an exceptional score of nett 62. Nice to see a lady winning one of these mixed medal competitions! Last month's div 2 winner, Rowland Barnfield, was runner-up on nett 68 and the lowest gross in this division.
Full result - click here.

Two's
There were four 2's recorded this month. John Day and Geoff Denner at the 2nd. Mark Richardson at the 16th and Jon Miller at the par 4 3rd ... (nice!).

Owen Millennium Trophy
Josh Wallin heads the Owen Millennium Trophy table by 5 strokes from John Day with Dave Warwick in 3rd spot. Full listing - click here.

Summer Medal Aggregate
Roger Carter is still 10 shots clear in the Summer Medal Aggregate from Paul Tebbutt & Andrew Mead. I think we need a miracle to catch up now with only one counting medal to go!! Current standings - click here.
