Men vs Seniors

After a "scorching" week of weather, it was back to normal chilly March conditions for the annual friendly match between the Men and Seniors today. Two teams of twelve battled it out in this four-ball matchplay event. All the matches were very competitive, played in good spirit and most matches were very close. But the Men's team finally prevailed by winning the match 4 1/2 to 1 1/2.
Many thanks to all competitors who took part today and supported this event.

March Junior Medal

This month's Junior medal was played yesterday in perfect conditions. Only a small field of 6 players, but some excellent scoring.
Dan Green was back to winning ways having captured both the Nov and Dec medals last year with an excellent nett 66 and earning a handicap reduction. One shot behind, earning a handicap reduction of 2 shots was George Baker. Third place went to Jack Unsworth on nett 69 who carded the lowest gross of the day with a fine 75.

After the first three medals of the year, Luke Bannister still tops the Junior Masters table but only by one point from George Baker. Still plenty to play for throughout this season.

March Weekday Stableford

A reasonably sized field for this month's Weekday Stableford played on Thu 15th and Fri 16th March.
The result saw a reversal of fortunes from last month's competition with the same two players battling it out at the top. The winner was last month's runner-up Mark Richardson with a creditable 39 points. Runner-up was last month's winner, Tim Page, on 37 points. Carole Scott Cup

Another wet one ... I know we're on a drought alert and we need plenty of rain, but please, not on competition days!! At least it brightened up a bit towards the end of the round. Forty-four players (33 men and 11 ladies) entered this mixed stroke-play competition.
Today's deserved winner was Mark Allen who gave us a lesson in determination. His gross 44 on the front nine was followed by a gross 34 on the back nine to give Mark (winner of this event 7 years ago) a total of 68 nett. Runner-up, one shot behind Mark, was 2010 winner Kim Richardson who also excelled on the back nine. Third place went to Ian Turner just ahead of Fay Unsworth on count-back after both carded nett 71. Thanks to all players who braved the elements and took part today to make this a successful event.

This is the third event of the year that counts towards the Order of Merit trophy. The early pace-setter is Kim Richardson. After today's success, Mark Allen is propelled into second place just 3 points behind. Current positions - click here.

March Seniors Medal

A good field of seniors (33 men and 5 ladies) competed in the March Seniors Medal today. Although conditions seemed quite benign, it was cold with a chilly wind and the course was playing very long (particularly from the back tees). To illustrate this, only 4 players managed to break gross 90 today!!
The men's medal was won by Allan Trotman with an excellent score of nett 69. He was the only player to break par today. Two shots behind was runner-up Roy Whiting followed by Rob Seaton who narrowly beat Geoff Denner after both carded nett 73.
Full result - click here.

In the ladies medal, Linda Vale was the runaway winner with a nett 76. Runner-up was Lesley Cratchley closely followed by Liz Evans.

Only a single two recorded today by John Day but, unfortunately, he didn't contribute to the two's pool!!! The money will be carried forward to the April Medal.

Men v Ladies v Seniors v Juniors

The competition between teams of Men, Ladies, Seniors and Juniors was played yesterday. This is a basically a fun competition, but still retains a bit of a competitive edge with the annual trophy and bragging rights at stake! There are eight members in each team with the best four Stableford scores counting towards the team score.
The clear winners again this year were the Men's team making it a hat-trick of wins. Runners-up for the second year running were the Seniors team followed by the Juniors and then the Ladies.

Club Captain Jon Miller and Vice-Captain Jeremy Twaits with the coveted trophy won by the Men's team.

A big thank-you to all members who took part in this match.

March Medal

The postponed March medal was finally played today in totally different conditions to last week. Last week we had flooded greens and soaking wet competitors - this week, the conditions were perfect on a lovely Spring day for the first stroke play medal of the year.

Division 1

The players in the top division took full advantage of the conditions today. This month's winner with a superb nett 66 (gross 69) was Max Nicholls. The unlucky runner-up was Roger Tillett with an excellent nett 67. Third place went to Jack Unsworth who just beat Chris Richardson on count-back after both carded nett 72's.

Full result - click here.

Division 2
Another excellent Junior performance in Div 2 with Josh Wallin heading the pack also on nett 66. Runner-up was Paul Hickey on nett 70. One shot further back was Geoff Denner who just pipped Rowland Barnfield on count-back.

Seniors Stableford

This week's Seniors event was a yellow-ball Stableford. A game where teams of three take turns to play a yellow ball (this week it was an orange one!?!?) which counts double points plus the best score on each hole from one other member of the team. Sounds simple enough, but there are some "cruel" rules, one of which says that if your yellow (or orange) ball goes out of bounds or is lost, it cannot be used any more. I say cruel because that is precisely what happened to our team. One of our team went OOB on the 3rd hole, so we were effectively playing a Bowmaker for the rest of the round. The expected wooden spoon was our prize on return to the clubhouse.

For those who managed to keep their ball in play ... the winners were Malcolm Passey, Richard Hook and Alan Owen with 119 points. One point behind in runners-up spot were Ray Tillen, Bob Evans and Linda Vale closely followed by Sam Whiting, Barrie Sloane and Lesley Cratchley.

Looking forward to playing a white ball this weekend!!!
