Presentation Evening

On Saturday 28th January, NRGC held their annual Presentation Evening hosted by Club Captain Jon Miller and Ladies Captain Sam Whiting. Members and their partners attended the event to celebrate the winners of trophies and cups for competitions during 2011 season.

We were privileged and delighted to welcome Maureen Madill as our guest speaker this year. Maureen is a professional golfer, coach and broadcaster. Winner of the British Ladies Amateur Golf Championship in 1979 and the British Ladies Amateur Stroke Play Championship in 1980, she also represented GB&I in the Curtis Cup in 1980, and later coached the team between 1998 and 2004. Maureen turned professional in 1986 and played on the Ladies European Tour until 1996. More recently, she has also worked for the BBC as an on-course commentator. A big thank-you to Maureen for entertaining us with her tales of life on tour and commentating.

We were also entertained with the music of Brian Grace and the beautiful voice of a young singer named Laura Kendik.

Many thanks to Fiona and her staff for the excellent catering for the evening. This was Fiona's last day as our catering manager and we all wish her well in her new venture in Devizes. We shall certainly miss her.

January Medal

As you can see from the picture (courtesy of Andrew Buchanan), the first main medal of the year was a typically cold one with temperatures of -4C at the start. The ice, fog and frost cleared towards the end but that didn't help with the scoring in this Stableford which resulted in both Men and Lady competitions calculated as "Reductions Only".

Division 1
The top division was headed by Ian Folwell on 35 points followed by Jim Green (Snr) on 31 points and David Warwick one point further back.

Division 2
One of our hardy seniors was the winner in this division, Derrick Perrin carding the top score of the day of 36 points. Runner-up was John Baron on 35 points. Geoff Denner grabbed third spot on count-back from Ian Turner, Roy Whiting and Bob Stevenson after all scored 33 points.

Seniors January Medal

The first medal of the year was played today by the Seniors. The course was playing long with a stiff south-westerly wind and the scoring was understandably higher than usual in this strokeplay event.
Only one player managed to break par today and that was the winner of the men's medal Jeremy Proud with a superb nett 69. Behind Jeremy there were three players on nett 72. Rob Seaton (lowest gross 83) grabbed the runners-up spot on count-back from Rod Spring and Barry Heath. Full result - click here.
The ladies also found it tough going with no player breaking nett 80! Liz Evans was the victor from Lesley Cratchley on count-back after both carded nett 82. Third place went to Linda Vale followed by Sam Whiting with the lowest gross for the ladies. Full result - click here.

Eighteen players entered the two's competition and there were three winners - Paul Tebbutt (2nd), Roy Whiting (16th) and Rob Seaton (2nd and 11th).
Steve Thompson kindly donated wine for his birthday last week, and drew four random winners from the scorecards - Les Eden, Rob Seaton, Jeremy Proud and Gordon Turner.
