Seniors RNLI Stableford

Another beautiful day for golf despite the breeze!! A very good field of thirty-five seniors (30 men and 5 ladies) competed for the prizes in today's event. In line with tradition, this Stableford competition was played off 7/8 handicap from the yellow tees for men.

Scoring was very close with the top 19 places only separated by 4 points. However, the outright winner today was Brian Faithfull with 39 points. On 38 points the runners-up spot was claimed by Allan Trotman on count-back from Alan Owen, Ray Tillen and Al Drennan. Best lady today was Judy Willson who took sixth place on 37 points.

April 9-Hole Stableford

The first of the monthly 9-Hole Stableford competitions was played this evening.
These 9-Hole qualifying events are a new innovation mainly aimed at players who for one reason or another are unable to compete regularly in weekend 18-hole qualifying competitions. As the name suggests, the competitions are played over 9-holes (front nine) and are open to ALL members. They will be played once a month this calendar year (April - August) to assess the success of organising these events. The next competition is planned for May 24th. See notice board for details.

This month's competition was won by John Christopher (20hcp) with a score of 22 points. The runner-up was decided on count-back as the next six players all carded 18 points. Mike Willson just pipped David Warwick, John Graham, Tom Wallin, Sam Whiting and Dean Butler.

April Fool Texas Scramble

Todays event was played in warm sunshine with a welcome cooling breeze blowing and the course in immaculate condition (many thanks to the green staff). Twenty-one teams of three competed for the prizes and the scores, as usual were excellent.

It was very close at the top of the leaderboard and the winners and runners-up had to be separated on card count-back after both scored nett 56.2. The winners, courtesy of an impressive gross 31 on the back nine were Darren Boyce, Jean Raincock & Lorraine Storey. Runners-up were the team of new members Tony Ilsley, Matthew Atkins & Trevor Mouring (hope they don't think it's that easy every week!!!). In third place were the Turners (Nick, Pete and Ian) on nett 57.0.

April Junior Medal

Seven juniors took part and there were some excellent scores.
Max Nicholls net 67, Chris Richardson and Lloyd Childs net 66, but all to no avail as Dan Green came in at the end with a net 65 to secure his first win. Although Lloyd was beaten into 2nd place he scored an excellent gross 70 one under par.

Scratch Team vs Donnington Valley

A hard fought battle at Sandford Springs against Donninton Valley saw us just lose out by three matches to nil. All were very close affairs with Ian and Max 4 down, Curtis and Conor 2 down and Lloyd and Joe losing the last to be beaten by one hole.

April Weekday Stableford

A much better sized field this month competed in the beautiful sunshine in the April Weekday Stableford on Thursday and Friday. A total of twenty-three players took to the course.

Head professional Nick Mitchell led the way by showing us how the course should be played carding a fantastic gross 64 to amass 43 points. Fortunately, it's an amateur event so Nick's score did not count in the competition !!!!

Behind Nick, there were three players on 41 points, so the winner had to be decided on count back. David Warwick (13hcp) just pipped the visiting Deanwood pair of Julian and Kalebh Black. Fourth place went to Matt Baillie on 40 points.

John Ives Memorial Cup

Twenty-four pairings set out this morning to compete for the prizes in the John Ives Memorial Cup. The weather was perfect with the course bathed in warm sunshine and very little wind. The competition was played as a better-ball strokeplay event with the men off the white tees.

With the weather being so kind, scoring was always going to be low, but Mark France and Danny Glover carded a fantastic nett 60 to win the cup seven shots ahead of their nearest competitors. The field below this score were very tightly bunched with the next eleven pairings separated by just two shots. Six teams were tied on nett 67, but John and Carl McCartney just claimed the runners-up spot on count-back.

Pace of play
Well - it WAS all going quite nicely. The first few competitions of the year were on or near our pace of play targets, but today was nothing short of abyssmal !!!! The average time was 4hrs 20 mins which is at least 30 mins over our target. Given that the R&A guideines for a four-ball event are 3hrs 50mins, I think we can safely say we failed today !!! Let's hope that was just a one-off. We really must try harder to get these times down below 4hrs and nearer our target of 3hrs 45mins. Thanks in advance for your co-operation.

Scratch Team v Calcot

The season has started with a disappointment following a 2 - 1 defeat by Calcot Park at Donnington Valley. At the turn, we were up in one match and all square in the other two. Unfortunately Ian and Max finally lost by 3 holes as did Curtis and Jimmy but the new pairing of Joe and Lloyd continued their good form over the front nine to hold on to their 2 hole lead to win two up.

Nine-Hole Qualifying Competitions

Nine Hole Qualifying Competitions (CONGU - Unified Handicapping System Clause 22) were introduced to help players who cannot, for one reason or another, always play in weekend competitions and will be particularly attractive to members in the summer evenings. These competitions are open to all members and will be played as mixed Stableford competitions.

Category 1 players may participate and his/her score will be recorded in the Player Handicap Record but the score will be disregarded for handicap purposes.

The format for Nine-Hole Qualifying competitions is Stableford with a 'neutral' 18 points for the nine unplayed holes automatically added to the Nine-Hole Stableford score.

The course for this competition will be holes 1 to 9 which will have a 70 SSS (Yellow Tees) for the men and 71 SSS (Red Tees) for the ladies.

There is a formula for working out a player's handicap for this competition and we have been supplied with Conversion Charts by the EGU and the EWGA.

The first competition is on Tuesday 26th April and will continue once a month until August. Tee-off times will be around 17:30 to 18:00hrs giving plenty of time to complete the round in daylight hours. The starting times will be dependent on the number of entrants.

Entry will be by £3 stamp placed on the entry sheet on the notice board and cards for the competition should be collected from the Pro-Shop on the day.

Proposed Tuesday dates are: - April 26, May 24, June 22, July 12 and August 9.

Early lead for Andrew

After only four counting competition results this year, Andrew Buchanan has established an early lead in the Order of Merit table. His two runners-up spots in the January Fourball and Carole Scott Cup, a third place in the Astres Foursomes and a semi-final appearance in the Winter Greensomes have given him a 10 point lead in the table.
But with another 13 counting competitions to go this year, there's plenty of time for the chasing pack to catch up. The next opportunity to grab some points is the John Ives Memorial Cup on Sunday 17th April. Look out Andrew ... as we witnessed last weekend, an early lead can be a poisoned chalice !!!!

Men's Roll Up - 10th April

Glorious weather at last but a somewhat disappointing turnout for this weeks rollup. Nonetheless those that did come along enjoyed a pleasant morning and much amusement, mainly centred on John Baron leaving home without his clubs leading to his wife accusing him of not playing golf but having an affair instead!!! Its my duty to report that not only did John play, but yet again romped home with 44 points to win the individual stableford prize despite being cut a shot from last week. Another cut next time out John.
The devilishly handsome Jake Chambers was second with 39 points and won the drawn aggregate pairs prize with Mark Richardson. Keep it going Jake, especially when we team up next weekend. The nearest the pin on the sixteenth was won by Jim Green senior who won a melted easter egg because I left it in my van !!
Owing to our policy of welcoming guests, I am pleased to report that both Mark and Kenny Amor have decided to become full members of the club, and that recent signing 'Ben' has played his first medal and continues to improve. No roll up this Sunday but Easter Sunday usual time for another fun packed event.

Seniors RNLI Postponed

Unfortunately, due to essential work being carried out on the course, the Seniors RNLI competition due to be played this Wednesday has had to be postponed.

There will be 9-holes open for play, so all Seniors can still play a Stableford on that day, possibly playing the same 9-holes twice. Please come to the Clubhouse as usual on Wednesday when more details will be available.

The RNLI competition will be re-scheduled for a future date.

Juniors vs Test Valley

A disappointing day saw the first ever home defeat as Junior Organiser.
Charlie and Lloyd fought hard for halved matches and Max Nicholls produced a very good win. The others battled bravely with Chris Richardson and Curtis MacGeever losing 5/4 and 3/1 respectively and Danny Glover was a little unlucky to lose 2 down after his second shot rolled through the 18th never to be seen again ...that is golf.

Seniors vs Bishopswood

The Seniors played their first home match of the season on Thursday, again playing in lovely sunny conditions. Unfortunately, although each match was close fought, the Seniors lost 3-1 with 2 matches halved. The winning pairing for NRGC was Derrick Perrin and Allan Trotman who were 2 up after 18 holes. The Ray Tillen/Richard Hook partnership halved their match, as did Rob Seaton and Alan Pearce. Nearest the pin prizes were won by Dave Petrie (Bishopswood) on the 14th and Ray Tillen (NRGC) on the 16th.
A superb 'Fiona' meal rounded off the day for both teams. Bishopswood were VERY impressed with the state of our course and were equally impressed with the food and the hospitality. They have asked for forms for the Senior Open to be sent to them, as they are all keen to come back again to NRGC. A compliment indeed to all the greenkeeping and catering staff!

April Seniors Medal

Whilst several of the NRGC Seniors were away in Spain on a golfing break with Golf Manager, Nick Mitchell, 30 seniors (27 men and 6 ladies) took to the course in lovely sunny conditions to take part in the mixed April Seniors Medal.
The player who led them home was Rob Seaton (12hcp), surprisingly winning his first ever Seniors Medal, with a score of nett 71 and the lowest gross of the day (83). Mike Charlton (20hcp) also carded a 71, but lost out on first place on count back. In third, was Jan Hinks (34hcp) with her nett 72. Three players came into the clubhouse with nett 74's, however, Judy Willson (18hcp) beat Rod Spring (16hcp) and Allan Trotman (15hcp) on countback to take fourth place.

Men's Roll-up - 3rd April

Another busy morning for the mens roll up. This week we ran a team event alongside the usual individual competition, and a nearest the pin on the sixth.

The bottle of wine was won by Nigel Huszarick's deftly played wedge, well thats what he told me he took, and who am I to disbelieve? Mark Richardson must surely have felt he had broken his second place jinx of previous weeks but unfortunately his 43 points was overhauled by Mark Allen's 44 ... we're all off to The Grove to see if we can get three shots back on our handicaps!!! Seriously, well done Sparky another great round. Mark's bad luck continued as Jimmy Green's team of Nigel, Mark Amor and 'Ben' came in at the end to edge the team score.

Congratulations to all the winners, and thanks to new faces Jim Green snr and Phil Knight for their first appearances, and also our captain John Graham who returned for his first outing since putting his back out on the first tee last November in our first roll up. I believe he is unscathed by the experience but just lying down in a darkened room dreaming of European success for UNITED.

As usual next Sunday, register before 9.30 please.

April Medal

Thirty-five men and seven ladies competed today for the April medals. Although the weather was dry and relatively bright, the strong south-westerly breeze made for difficult scoring conditions with only two players managing to break nett 70.

Division 1
The top division saw the welcome return of father and son team Phil and John Bye, and it was son John who took the honours today. John Bye (11hcp) returned the best nett of the day (65) and also the lowest gross (76) to win the medal. Runner-up was Nick Powell (11hcp) with a creditable nett 70. Third place went to Jim Purvis (9hcp) who just pipped Andy Steadman (6hcp) and John Day (10hcp) on count back after all three had carded nett 71.

Division 2
Exactly a year after his last medal, and fresh off a win in the Winter Greensomes, Richard Osgood (16hcp) was the clear winner in this division with a nett 67. Runner-up was Jeremy Twaits (19hcp) who just beat Ian Turner (14hcp) on count back after both scored nett 71.
Full result - click here.

Division 3
This month's winner in Div 3 was Nick Turner (20hcp) who carded nett 70. Runner-up was Aubrey Phillips (20hcp) with nett 71 followed by Jake Chambers (20hcp) on nett 74. Welcome and well done to Ofer Ben-David (apologies if the name is wrong!!) who played in his first comp today.

Ladies
Today saw a welcome return to Fay Unsworth (11hcp) to the winners circle with a nett 72. I can't believe it's over a year since Fay won her last medal!! Runner-up was Maria Tillett (16hcp) who just pipped Kim Richardson (13hcp) on count back after both scored nett 73.

Two's
Only two 2's were recorded today - Barry Heath and Nick Powell both on the 16th. Let's hope they paid their entry into the two's competition !?!?

Pace of play
Again thank-you to everyone for recording your finish times on the scorecards. I think just by recording the time on the card it makes us all more aware of our round times. The average time for this month's medal was 3h 53m. There were a few groups (unusually the earlier tee times) that crept over the 4-hour mark, but thanks to some clever and strategically placed breaks in the tee-times by Andrew, this never accumulated towards the end of the field. We're still slightly over our 3hr 45m target, but if we all stay aware and keep working on it, we can improve. Thanks again for your cooperation.
