Men's Roll-Up

The men's roll up will resume on Sunday Feb 13th.
Apologies for the break but we've had a lot of competitions, bad weather and other commitments. Hopefully we will now get back into the full swing of things and be able to put something on most weekends, including Saturdays.
Just for this first date I would appreciate some indication of numbers so please email, blog or phone me if you will be attending.
Remember you will need to register on the day before 9.30 in order to be included in the draw.

Juniors

A busy day saw our Juniors taking part in 2 events.

1) The Lee Frame Memorial Trophy took place at the Racecourse. In this triangular match play event we gained five of the six points available. Well done Charlie Butler, Jack Unsworth, Bev Frame and Lorraine Storey. Also, thanks to Peter Smith for hosting the match while I was at Crookham with the Junior Team.

2) In the match at Crookham we took five rookies and the 'old veteran' Captain Curtis. Disappointed that we eventually lost 4 matches to 2 even though we were in a winning position and let the games slip. Congratulations to Danny Glover and Luke Bannister for winning their matches.

January Fourball

Twenty-four pairings played in the January Fourball today. This is usually played from the white tees for men, but as most of the white tees are recovering at the moment, the men played from the yellow tees, which meant the ladies in the competition had an adjustment of +1 on their handicaps. Despite the course still playing long at the moment, the scores were excellent.
The outright winners today were Fay Unsworth and Shey Walder with a great score of 42 points. To make it a family success, Jack Unsworth partnered Andrew Buchanan to the runner-up spot with 41 points. Third place was decided on countback with both teams on 40 points. John Day and Jeremy Twaits just edged out Chris Moore and Tony Glover.
Just to complete a special weekend, we had another hole-in-one today. This time from Sam Whiting at the 14th. Well done Sam - and thanks on behalf of everyone for the drinks !!!

Hole-in-one for Lloyd

The first junior medal of the season was played today. A qualifier from yellow tees produced incident and some good scores. Second place was secured by Jack Unsworth with a very solid gross 77 (net 68) but the winner was Lloyd Childs gross 70 (net 65). He had a roller coaster round with a hole-in-one at the 2nd then birdies at the 4th and 5th took him to 4 under par. By the 13th, he was back to level par before finally making a birdie at the 18th to take him back under par. Only eight played but the season is young and I am sure the numbers will grow.
The winner received a £10 voucher as well as a medal.

January Weekday Stableford

A very small field braved the cold weather to play in the January Weekday Stableford on Thursday and Friday this week. At least it was better than last January which was cancelled because of snow !!!!
Although conditions were not condusive to good scoring, this month's clear winner was Kim Richardson (13hcp) scoring 34 points. The runners-up spot was decided on count-back with three players on 27 points. John Taylor (21hcp) just edged out Chris Richardson (16hcp) and Jamie Prater (16hcp). Mark Richardson (12hcp) was the support act with 25 points.

Wendy Seymour Texas Scramble

The re-scheduled 2010 Wendy Seymour Texas Scramble was finally played today. This used to be the Winter Texas Scramble, but was renamed in honour of Wendy Seymour.
Wendy, who sadly passed away last year after a long and brave fight against cancer was a very popular and active member at the Club and is sadly missed by us all. Husband Paul was there today to help present the prizes and son Dan (now a qualified professional) who has been at the Club for 10 years since he was a very promising youngster also played in the event.

A great turn-out of twenty-two teams of three took to the course to play for the prizes. With a strong south westerly blowing (unusual at Newbury!?!), scoring conditions were not easy, but that did not prevent some great scores being returned. The eventual winners were Neil Johnson, James Mitchell and Alan Mitchell (nett 57.8). Runners-up were Sean Sargeant, Jamie Prater and Janice Paulin (nett 59.2) and in third place Daniel Seymour, Charlie Butler and Lloyd Childs (nett 59.4). Special mention to Dan's team who carded a fantastic gross 61 (10 under par).

The presentation of the prizes was followed by a raffle which raised over £250 for the Rarer Cancers Foundation. A huge thank-you to all who attended and participated in this special event.

Members - Book a Tee-Time

It has become increasingly apparent that members are coming to the golf course and just walking out to the 1st or 10th tees if they see a gap and assuming they can play.

We have had a number of instances recently where this practice has caused problems with both other members and green-fee players that have booked tee-times and been held up by members casually walking out to play and assuming it's OK.

Members, you MUST book a tee-time or at least check-in to the Pro-Shop BEFORE going out to play on the course. Anyone who does NOT do this may be disappointed and embarrassed when asked to leave the course !!

Thank-you for your co-operation.

Medal prizes

Following a review of the prizes given for our monthly adult medals, the committee has decided the following:

Winner of each division (1, 2, 3 and ladies) will be able to choose between either a boxed medal OR a £15 Pro-Shop voucher.

Runners-up will receive a £5 Pro-Shop voucher. As now, the runners-up prize is only given if there are 10 or more competitors playing in that particular division.

The above will be in force from the Feb 2011 medal onwards.
The current prize arrangements for Senior and Junior medals remain unchanged.

Seniors January Medal

Thirty-seven seniors (31 men and 6 ladies) competed for the January Seniors Stableford medals today. The cold conditions together with a very stiff "breeze" blowing across the course made scoring very challenging and consequently because of the CSS calculations, both men and ladies comps were computed as "Reductions Only".

The Men's division was topped by Barry Heath (18hcp) with a creditable score of 35 points. Runner-up was Paul Tebbutt (14hcp) who somehow managed to nobble it round the course and score 34 points. Two points further back was Rod Spring (16hcp).

In the ladies section, Lesley Cratchley (23hcp) won the medal with a very good 31 points. One point behind Lesley was runner-up Liz Evans (33 hcp). Sam Whiting (13hcp) took third place with 26 points.

Divots on Tees

I have seen and heard blame being layed at the feet of 'pay and play' golfers. Not always the case because before the medal on Sunday the tees had been moved, but to my dismay there were a considerable number of divots not filled. Only members had been on the course that morning.
Are you the guilty one????

January Medal

At last, after all the bad weather - back to competition golf! ... And considering all the horrible weather we've had over the last month, the course wasn't in bad nick.
Thirty-seven players (30 men and 7 ladies) competed for the medals in today's Stableford.

Division 1
The top division was won with 39 points by Charlie Butler (4hcp) who is obviously getting back on form. One point behind and runner-up was one of his playing partners Paul Seymour (7hcp) with Chris Adlem (8hcp) taking third place on 37 points.

Division 2
In a very busy division with 6 points covering the top 10 positions, Russell Bowers (15hcp) captured his first medal at NRGC with a score of 39 points. Runner-up and one point behind Russell was the consistent Jeremy Twaits (19hcp). Third place went to Roger Tillett with 37 points.

Division 3
A surprisingly small field in Div 3 this month but Peter Turner (21hcp) came out on top with 37 points. Runner-up was John Swallow (28hcp) on 34 points followed by Nick Turner (20hcp) on 28 points.

Ladies
After a superb year in 2010 Lizzie Swallow (4hcp) started the new year with a win in the ladies section with 35 points. Two points behind was runner-up Maria Tillett (17hcp), followed by Sam Whiting (13hcp) on 29 points.

Max is the Master

Another up and coming young player Max Nicholls has lifted the Junior Masters Trophy for 2010. Max who already plays off 8 handicap at the age of 14 shows great promise and has already tasted Scratch League golf for the first time this year.

Max follows a long line of previous winners one of which was Dan Seymour who went on to turn professional.

Good luck Max and I hope to see more steady progress in 2011
