Scratch Team News

We have now competed the first series of matches and after a good start to the season we have now slipped to 5th place in the league. However, the top five places are covered by a difference of only 3 points. A strong second half to the season that commences on 31st July can still see us achieve our objective of a 'top 2' finish.

Thirty-three seniors competed for the annual RNLI Stableford shield today. All players were restricted to 7/8 handicap with the men also forfeiting one shot to the ladies. All proceeds from this event go to the RNLI charity.
After a chilly start with a cool easterly breeze blowing, the weather warmed up by mid morning as did the scoring. The winner with a score of 41 points was Barry Heath who beat Roy Whiting on countback with a better back six holes. Third place went to Malcolm Passey with 39 points.

NRGC v Donnington Valley

On a fairly decent weather-wise day, NRGC entertained Donnington Valley today. A hard fought match saw Donnington Valley come out on top by 4 1/2 - 1 1/2.
A special thanks to my partner for the day in his first club match Jeremy Twaits who after a nervous first hole played well and seem to get into the swing of playing for the the club in this format. Thanks also to Nigel Huszarik for turning up at very short notice.
I used the excuse of volcanic ash for causing the defeat !!!
A big thank you to all who played today for our club today.

Scratch Team v Wokefield Park

For the first time this season I was disappointed by the performance and the result. Despite facing a an under strength Wokefield team (at Weybrook Park) we suffered another 5 - 2 defeat yesterday. We clearly had players of greater ability but defeat was caused by the fact that we made more errors than our opponents. Foursomes is a form of golf that tests every aspect of the game and provides a stern test of the temperament and mental strength of the individuals. On this occasion our golf was more untidy than it was in our opening two matches where we demonstrated what can be achieved in foursomes golf without the careless errors.
There is now a long period to the 31st July when we play Wokefield again at Sand Martins so it gives me time to study form and think about pairings for the future.

Edward Pearce Trophy

Thirty-six senior players (31 men and 5 ladies) competed for the Edward Pearce Trophy today. Conditions were favourable for good scoring and, as usual, the seniors did not disappoint with only two Stableford points difference between the top eight players.
The top three all scored 40 points and had to be separated on card count-back. The eventual winner was Richard Cross who just beat Monty Norman into second place with a better back 6 holes. In third place was Paul Tebbutt who could only manage 19 points on the back nine. In fourth place, one point further back on 39, was Linda Vale who just pipped Mike Charlton on the same score.

Bogey Competition

With all the competitions going on this weekend (Bader Cup, Hillman Trophy, Scratch League) and people trying to complete their summer ko matches before the deadline, today's Bogey Competition suffered in terms of number of entrants.
However, the relatively small field of 19 players did not detract from the quality of play in the event as once again it was very tight at the business end of the leaderboard.
The winner was decided on count-back with Jeremy Twaits just beating Roger Tillet - both players were 5 up on the course. Third place went to Maria Tillet who was 4 up on the course. Well done to all.

Scratch Team v Sandford Springs

Yesterday at Wokefield Park, the team suffered its second defeat of the season but still cling on to joint top spot in the league. It is becoming very clear that the standard of all teams is very similar and already every club has suffered at least one defeat and there is not going to be a run away champion this season. What is pleasing is that out of the twelve individual games played we have won six i.e. 50% success rate which clearly demonstrates we are a force to be reckoned with, and as our younger players learn to win at this level we will become stronger and I am still confident we can still do extremely well this season.

Another Hillman Win

NRGC played at home today against Temple Artisans in the Hillman Trophy and won 4-3. It was another tight match as was all square at 3-3 until the last match came in.
It was a dry but cold and windy day for this match but with great company making it a very enjoyable day. A big thank you to all my team today T GLOVER , J GREEN, C McCARTNEY, J MILLER, N HUSZARIK, I FOLWELL and MYSELF well done lads. Also I would like to add the course is improving all the time since the recent work.

Thanks John Butcher ( Club Captain )

Bader Cup

The Bader Cup is a national mixed greensomes Stableford event sponsored by the Douglas Bader Foundation. This is a national charity that promotes the welfare of persons who are without one or more limbs, or otherwise physically disabled. The winners of each club's competition proceed to an all expenses paid day out at one of the twelve regional final venues throughout the UK. From there, the twelve regional final winners are invited to the Grand Final in Portugal. A proportion of the entry fees from today's competition is paid directly to the Bader Foundation.

Seventeen mixed pairs competed in today's competition in cloudy and overcast conditions. The scoring was extremely tight at the top of the leaderboard with the first two pairings separated on count-back of the front-nine having carded identical back-nines! The winners were Steve Ives and Jean Raincock who just beat the father and daughter pairing of Trevor and Lucy Mortimer. Both scored a superb 44 points. In third place were Dean Butler and Sandy Deacon with another great score of 43 points.

Monty's Longest Day

Many of you may not know Monty Norman, he doesn't play much at weekends but is a sprightly regular at our Senior events every Wednesday.
This year he is playing the Longest Day Golf Challenge.
It means he has to play 4 full rounds of golf in one day - Monday 21st June 2010.
He is playing all four rounds himself and will be supported by 4 other people each playing one round with him.
Why is he doing this you may ask? He is trying to raise £1000 for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity. Coincidentally this is also one of the appointed Captain's charities for this year.

Monty is asking for your support. If you would like to help Monty reach his £1000 target, please visit his donation page on http://original.justgiving.com/montynorman and give whatever you can.

Thank-you and good luck to Monty.

The runaway men's medal winner was Chris Moore with a superb score of nett 66. His gross 74 was easily the best of the day as well. The next three places were decided on countback with all three players carding nett 71's. Bob Evans took the silver medal just beating Rob Seaton and Ted Fitzsimons.

The ladies medal was won by Linda Vale (her first medal) with a score of nett 72. One shot further back were Jan Hinks and Sam Whiting. Jan just claimed the runners-up spot on countback.

May Medal

The May Medal was played today in appalling conditions (cold, wind and rain) with thirty-seven players (29 men and 8 ladies) competing for the medals. However, only 18 brave souls managed to finish their round. Both men and ladies medal competitions were calculated as "reductions only", so no increases in handicaps will occur.

Division 1
The winner of the top division this month was Curtis Macgeever with a score of nett 77. Curtis was the only finisher in this division so deserves his second succesive medal after his April medal win.
Full result - click here.

Division 2
At least there were 7 finishers in this division and at long last ... well done to John Graham who has finally shrugged off his "runner-up" tag by winning his first medal. He carded a nett 69 and was the only player in the whole field to break nett par. John recieves a 2-shot reduction on his handicap for his efforts. Runner-up was Mark Richardson with nett 76 followed by Ian Turner on nett 77.
Full result - click here.

Division 3
This division was a very close fought affair with Jeremy Twaits just taking the winners spot from Matthew Baillie on count-back after both had carded a nett 72. In third place was Nick Turner with nett 75.

Ladies
Another double winner ... this time in the Ladies section with Maria Tillett (nett 74) coming out on top following her success the April Medal last month. Runner-up was Louise Knight with nett 83 followed by Lesley Cratchley on nett 91 who just pipped Kim Richardson on count-back.
Special congratulations to Kim who smashed the course record for the number of shots taken to complete the par-3 14th hole. I believe the previous record was 16, but today Kim surpassed that with a magnificent 21 shots. Well done Kim !!!
